Grayling fishing in January 2025

Grayling fishing is all about getting out on the river in early January, in the wind, rain, snow, and normally freezing conditions, and seeing what happens. I always go out thinking, "If I catch one fish, I will be doing well." And sometimes things work out, and sometimes it's just a really nice walk by the river!

So the method is pretty simple get you flies down to the fish on the bottom and watch every little movement of the fly line to detect the bite! Do this while waist deep in freezing water, controlling your line so the drift isn't to fast or to slow and trying to make sure you don't freeze or go for a swim yourself! Sounds easy enough!

The issue during winter is that you might encounter floods, discoloured water, or extremely low clear water, each presenting its own difficulties. However, I would emphasize two key points: use flies you trust, and ensure you thoroughly cover the entire area in a grid pattern, regardless of whether the water is shallow, deep, fast, or slow, because you can never be certain of the fish's hiding spots.

This fish was caught out of only 12 inches of water just on the edge of a fast current!

The main thing is to get out there and give it a try no matter what the weather is. The environment these fish live in is so beautiful that you can never fail to have a good day. Even if you don't catch fish you always learn something.

And the best part is always sending them back to grow bigger....
